[Laptop Review] 2019 LG GRAM 15 Inch Review, Unboxing & How to read Model Code Name

I have decided to write this 2019 LG GRAM review suddenly while checking my photo gallery in my phone. I had taken some unboxing pictures with happiness feeling after buying it around 4 months ago.

 

I started seriously agonizing which laptop I should buy because I really needed a laptop with many reasons. If my memory is accurate, lots of laptops were popular such as Samsung Pen-S Line, Samsung 9 Always Line, LG Gram Line, MSI Prestige P65 Line, and so on.

(Lots of laptop recommendations would be poped up if you try to search in internet such as Naver or Google, wouldn't they? haha)

 

In my thinking, It is really better to agonize and think very deep of the followed categories and buy the perfectly suitable one for yourself when you buy a laptop than following impulse buying. It's even not cheap! You aren't buying a simple t-shirt now lol

(I believe that you could be blind in price if the design of laptop is too much beautiful and gorgeous. So do I, but just be caution!)

You are able to select one among 'high-end, middle performance, or pretty good bang for the buck' according to the main purpose of usage, You are able to select one between 'light laptop and heavy, but high-end laptop' according to the main place of usage and own vehicle existance, and you are also able to select one which laptop is suitable for your hours of use.

 

You won't regret your choice if you follow the above instruction. Choose 3~5 kinds of laptop suitable for you, and set your within budget, and then dump some which doesn't fulfill within budget, and compare the details and designs for the last. Then you could have the perfect one which heats your heart and which you are able not to get bored easily.

(Probably design would be the first option if there are many selections of laptops in your list although you followed the instruction above, because we would try to check the details of products AFTER we got lured by design on the selling counter lol)

 

YEAH, I KNOW WE ALL KNOW THAT, BUT IT IS SO HARD TO KEEP AND FOLLOW THAT.. SO DID I..

Whatever else, the biggest reason I bought 'LG GRAM 15 Inch' was 'Design, enough performance for me, and working hour'.

(Let's pass the 'cost-effectiveness' to the dog passing there.)

Isn't it so beautiful!? It is like.. a pure white naked stuffs.. (omg it sounds like so perv hahaha)

It seems like I just considered only the design when I bought it, but it is not!

(If so, It is like you delude yourself haha)

 

In fact, It was totally fitted for my standards in performance, hours of battery use, design, and weight.

(I can't say the design and weight affected my decision more than any other.)

 

I feel like I was too much talkative without topic...

Check up the label on the box first if the order was accurately delivered.

 

 

I have bought this one via a Korean market website which is similar as AMAZON.

I chose to buy the model doesn't include operating system such as Windows.

(To buy it with cheaper price to save bucks :( )

 

You can check which date your laptop was assembled on the label, and also color.

Mine was assembled on March 04, 2019, and it is white color model :)

 

Don't you think that it is the first course to check up if your product is accurately delivered!?

You must check up whether the model name code is precise or not.

How to read the model code name of 2019 LG GRAM

 

 

Well, I don't want to be an explanation freak, but I should explain how to read the model code name of 2019 LG GRAM. (Because this post is being written to give information for readers!? haha)

 

My product's Model Name is..

 

15ZD990-VX50K : It was even assembled on March, 2019 too although I bought it on March, 2019.
                        It was totally a brand new one.

 

Ok, then I will write down how to read the model name code of 2019 LG GRAM.

The '15' refers to the SIZE in inch of your product.

I ordered 15 Inch one, so it is correct, isn't it? :)

Z : Operating system such as Windows is factory-installed.

ZD : Operating system such as Windows is NOT installed.

 

My code name includes ZD, right? So, it means mine doesn't include any operating system.

If 'V', Thunderbolt function is included.

If 'G', Thunderbolt function is NOT included.

 

Mine includes 'V', so it means I can use Thunderbolt function with my laptop.

(But I must buy thunderbolt cable myself :( )

I have no idea why they put duplicated meaning in one code name, but yeah it is also about installing operating system same as the explanation of 'Z & ZD' above.

 

A - Same as Z : factory installed operating system such as Windows

X - Same as ZD : NO installed operating system such as Windows

LG Gram choses for CPU from Intel. 3 kinds of Intel CPU are selected for LG GRAM.

 

8th Generation Intel Core™ i3 Processor 8145U

8th Generation Intel Core™ i5 Processor 8265U

8th Generation Intel Core™ i7 Processor 8565U

 

Those three kinds of Intel CPUs are installed in LG GRAM. I will omit to explain about details of each CPUs owing to the length of this post.

 

Intel CPU with 'U' letter at the last are 'Low Energy Consuming (Low Power) Products' using frequently for light-weight laptop or smart phone. It has lower performance than normal CPU installed in high performance desktop or laptop, but mostly installed in many kind of Ultrabook or light-weight laptop. In my thinking, they are used in many kinds of laptop because it consumes lower energy so that it lets battery lasting longer. 

(I am not an expert in computer category, so you guys can comment if I am wrong)

 

Whatever, the higher number it has, the better performance it has.

i3 8145U has dual-core system.

i5 & i7 has quad-core system.

 

Saying it easily,

Dual-core : Two people are working for a work

Quad-core : Four people are working for a work

Just think like this, then it would be much easier to understand this system :)

 

So perhaps, everyone understands it, right?

Get back to the model code!

 

3 : 8th Generation Intel Core™ i3 Processor 8145U is installed

5 : 8th Generation Intel Core™ i5 Processor 8265U is installed

7 : 8th Generation Intel Core™ i7 Processor 8565U is installed

 

So, you can guess 8th Generation Intel Core™ i5 Processor 8265U was installed in my laptop.

 

** It is just my opinion, but it seems like i5 Installed & 15 Inch model is the best and reasonable price among 2019 LG GRAM Models with some reasons about heat, hours of battery use, and performance benchmark table.

Simply, It is for like 'highly reduce loading time when you turn on the computer' and has much faster processing speed than HDD (Hard Disk Drive).'

It is simple, K means this product is made for Korean.

I am not sure what 'made for Korean means exactly', but it is like Korean alphabet is imprinted on the keyboard in my thinking.

 

So, according to the my explanation, if J or JP, C or CN, US, UK are written at the last of the model code name, It would mean :

 

J or JP : for Japanese

C or CN : for Chinese

US : for American

UK : for British

Unboxing

 

We all would feel excited when we open up a white brand new box.

 

 

When I bought this, there was an event for additional RAM and SSD with cheap price for LG GRAM in the Online Shopping Mall I made a purchase.

I had paid 50,000 KRW ~ 60,000 KRW (Approx. US$42.67 ~ US$51.20) for additional 8GB RAM.

 

There are each spare slot for RAM & SSD in LG GRAM so that you can freely add RAM & SSD as your taste for faster performance or enough capacity.

(The slot is existed only ONE for each. Additionally, I just know as it is better to add same level of RAM to give the best performance for laptop or desktop, for example, it is better to add 8GB RAM if your laptop or desktop was installed 8GB at first. I don't know the reason why because I am not an expert of computer area. So, it means you should change your original RAM as 16GB as well if you would like to add 16GB RAM. Do you know what I mean? I feel like my explanation is pretty complicating. :( )

 

Well, so have you ever heard 'the more RAM it has, the better performance would be shown?' I am pretty sure everybody would hear this if you are interested in computer hardware. I agree on it, too!

That's why I also purchased additional 8GB RAM to get better performance with 16GB RAM for my LG GRAM.

 

Finally, I could see the pure white main body!

Manual was under the main body.There was also some stuffs such as keyskin (key cover) if you shift the plastic(?) case.

I feel like most of companies copied Apple, USA's package method these days. It was innovative when people saw Apple's package at first. So pure, clean, classic, and simplified!

(It is win-win for both company and customer. It would cost less to create the package for company, and It would satisfy customer with beauty come from simple.)

I could feel meticulous consideration from the paper cover protecting monitor of the laptop.

 

 

I didn't purchase the additional SSD at first because I just planned not to play game except light one and to use only for common tasks, internet surfing, and blog. You could also add up one more SSD later on if you feel the capacity is not enough. On the other hand, SSD has very fast processing, but little expensive compared with HDD, so it is also possible to buy an external HDD for back-up or more capacity. (It is even much cheaper, but it would be unconvenient as well because you always need to bring that separately.)

 

If you are rich, don't hesitate at all, just buy the full option one lol but for people who thinks cost effectiveness like me, just buy similar as me and add more later on because LG GRAM isn't that cheap.. haha

I tried to participate most of the events made for LG GRAM to get those gifts such as Original LG GRAM Brand pouch, something cheap wireless mouse (I don't use it at all, I bought new one haha), and some application serial code like HANGUL OFFICE (Kind of a Korean Version of Microsoft Office). I also wrote a review after purchase to get laptop protect shield film.

Review

 

 

I have been using this laptop for around 4 months so far. I think I have bought it on the first week of March, 2019. I am very satisfied with this purchase this time owing to choosing it with my standard I set up with the way I wrote above. I don't feel any lack with SSD, Windows 10, 256GB enough capacity, and Intel i5 Quad-core performance. There was no problem to handle light work in Photoshop CC.

 

Now, let's look up what was the pros and cons of LG GRAM 15 Laptop.

 

 

▶ PROS ◀

 

The best pros of LG GRAM is, as you all know, WEIGHT. I feel like this is not regular laptop's weight, it is like feather! The weight of LG GRAM 13 Inch is less than 1kg, and the weight of LG GRAM 15 Inch is litttttttttle over 1kg. With little exaggeration, I feel like it has same weight as iPad 6th Gen or iPhone XS Max + iPhone 7s plus when I tried to weigh it by putting it on my palm.

 

It is really really light. I could understand why LG advertised it focusing on the weight.

You won't feel any burden from weight although you put it in your backpack and roam around all day (In man's standard because I am a man). At first, I brought Main body of laptop + Pouch + Wireless mouse in my backpack, but in my standard, there is also no burden at all adding charger.

I am always bringing all laptop + pouch + wireless mouse + charger + iPad + Apple pencel + Small size of book + little gadgets without burden in my backpack all day these days. I think LG GRAM's weight is really innovative.

 

Moreover, GRAM's hours of use is really really long. I rarely play game with laptop first.

The battery remained around 5% after using 10 hours in a cafe.

 

(Conditions : The battery was fully-charged a day before / I didn't bring out the charger / Laptop was used with these tasks such as 'MS Word & EXCEL work, 2 kinds of messenger programs, Facebook, light tasks by Photoshop CC, Internet surfing, writing posts in my blog, activated real-time notifications of e-mail accounts, and et cetera)

 

Hours of use & Weight of LG GRAM is really the best among laptop in my thinking. If you are a person who really hates bringing your backpack heavily, just fully-charge it before you go out. I don't think you need to bring charger although you work with your laptop around 8~10 hours.

(You can't ignore the weight of charger as other laptop chargers are.)

 

The charger is also designed differently from usual laptop. It has round square shape with pure white color same as LG GRAM main body.

(I thought I took picture for the charger, but I probably forgot it :(, I didn't bring out the charger today as well haha I am currently writing this post in a cafe.)

 

I heard the original pouch of LG GRAM is around 300g in weight. You could customize what to bring out with your backpack according to your power of your shoulder :)

 

 

▶ CONS ◀

 

You can easily find PROS of LG GRAM in any posts, so let's see what is CONS of LG GRAM.

Be Caution! : You need to access BIOS of computer and change some settings when you install operating system if you bought 'NOT installed operating system one'.

You could get freak out when you install an operating system such as Windows if you don't have this information, so did I. I suggest for you to search the caution before installing.

(I won't explain how to change the setting here because the post would be too much long to read. I feel like it is already long enough -_-, it is also a secret that I am lazy to write that down here lol)

 

I will try to write a new post about that later on if I have time. I am not sure if this problem is only for LG GRAM or all for laptops made in LG Electronics.

I spent lots of hours because of this problem -_- so don't please forget searching that problem in Google before installing. Hopefully, there is no this problem for foreign version.

 

Another cons is that my laptop normally reaches to the Windows starting screen (the screen you need to write your password to access main screen of Windows) in 3 seconds. But, sometimes, I have no idea why it sometimes takes over a minute to reach the Windows starting screen, and even it restarts itself while loading the Windows starting screen. (NOT because of updating Windows.) It happens around 1~2 times per 10 times turning-on.

 

I didn't feel much inconvenient with it, and the service center wouldn't give any solution if they can't see any symptom of this problem with their eyes (because it is happening few times only, not all the time.) So, I am just using it without solving the problem now.

 

Furthermore, I can't say it is LG GRAM's cons, but there is obviously an irritating error. I think this error is occured by Windows, not LG GRAM, but it is really annoying. I have seen other laptops also have this error these days. I even visited to LG Service Center with this error, but they also said this annoying error is occured by Windows 10 after giving me temporary solution.

 

So here is the annoying error what that is.

 

When you leave your laptop to go to toilet or get a call while using it, you must know 'Sleep Mode' which is inherently set in Windows, it makes the irritating error would be written below.

 

Normally, if your laptop gets into the sleep mode, you can wake it up through touching a key, clicking the mouse or pressing the power button, right? But, it has totally no reaction whatever you do!! NO WAKE UP FROM THE SHIT BLACK SCREEN AT ALL WITH ANY ACTIONS!

 

For people who don't know what is 'Sleep Mode'...

Sleep mode, sometimes called standby or suspend mode, is a power-sparing state that a computer can enter when not in use. Laptop computers often enter sleep mode when they are closed. A computer usually wakes from sleep mode through touching a key, clicking the mouse or pressing the power button.

Fortunately, there is a easy-temporary solution for this problem. Just go to the Control Panel of Windows, type 'Sleep Mode' and search it, and deactivate this function.

Then, it is all solved. yeah!

 

If you must use this function, I think there is no other way, just need to wait for Windows 10's new updates till it is solved. (I have no idea if this problem has been solved because I am no longer using that function with my laptop.)

 

This cons section became so long although there are not many cons in LG GRAM because of explanation of the symptom and solutions haha. I am totally satisfied except those cons written above. Whatever else, the design is sooooooo Perfect! like Apple Macbook (lol). I still feel happy whenever I see my laptop LMAO Kidding :)

Wow, yes here is the end of my review today. I have no idea if I wrote this review well because it was my first time to write a review for appliance.

I really wish it would give you good information and you guys could understand my review well. I am pretty worried if my words are not understandable and are uncomfortable to be read.
